I saw it with David Cromer, too, in July 2009. I'd seen a production at Trinity Rep in Providence, (with an African-American woman stage manager, btw) and I've seen the DVD with Paul Newman. But this production simply blew me away.

For the first time, I felt like the play could be taking place in a small New Hampshire town (or any small town) today. Like he did with Brighton Beach Memoirs, Cromer stripped away all the schmalz (no fake, exaggerated New England accents) and made it timeless.

I also think Barrow Street is the perfect location - you feel like you're in a community center in a small New England town watching a play. And Cromer delivered the most un-actorish performance I've ever seen. When he began speaking, I really thought he was just giving the turn off your cell phone announcement but it was the beginning of the play!

One of my favorite things I've witnessed in Manhattan is being out at 4:00 am - leaving for the airport or coming home from work or being out - I love the juxtaposition of people still being out on the town and people heading to work. It's a fabulous intersection.

Wow, what an adventure. How can you not love a city with an Apple store that's open 24/7! Talk about the greatest city in the world! I am surprised that there are only three all-night Starbucks in Manhattan, though. There must be a diner somewhere that's open all night.

Excellent list, Kevin! Of course, I would have enjoyed sitting right next to you for each of these and so many more. I just touched the tip of the iceberg with my post, so I'll have to revisit that with added choices.

Garrett, thanks for pointing that out. I had a difficulty ascertaining the reasons for the billing.

Actually, Donna McKechnie is on the album. If you listen you can definitely hear her, and she also lists it on her website as a recording of hers.
