While there are a plethora of gems that I could cite from the universal evisceration received by Roundabout&#8217;s dead-on-arrival revival of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Bye Bye Birdie<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/everythingmusicals.com\/everything_i_know_i_learn\/2009\/10\/bye-bye-birdie-at-the-roundabout-theater.html\">I&#8217;ll<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/steveonbroadway.blogspot.com\/2009\/10\/bye-bye-birdie-sob-review.html\">let<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backstage.com\/bso\/reviews-ny-theatre-broadway\/ny-review-bye-bye-birdie-1004022893.story\">you<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/review\/VE1117941386.html?categoryid=33\">enjoy<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/canadianpress\/article\/ALeqM5jHwG3GWOxgbbUwl6sCY__8VJtDXg\">finding <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/entertainment\/theater\/bye-bye-birdie-no-reason-to-put-on-a-happy-face-1.1523546\">those<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/music\/2009\/10\/16\/2009-10-16_bye_bye_birdie_is_guilty_of_fowl_play.html\">on<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/film-reviews\/bye-bye-birdie-theater-review-1004022911.story\">your<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/theater2.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/16\/theater\/reviews\/16byebye.html\">own<\/a>. But reading Harry Haun&#8217;s account of the opening night festivities on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playbill.com\/news\/article\/133922-PLAYBILL_ON_OPENING_NIGHT_Bye_Bye_Birdie%E2%80%94A_New_Nest_for_Conrad\/pg2\">Playbill.com<\/a>, I encountered this insightful passage with director-choreographer Robert Longbottom. Here the auteur-in-training talks about some of the touches that make this revival unique:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Longbottom has made quite a few alterations in the original text. &#8220;The first act wasn&#8217;t touched, not a word of it,&#8221; he quickly pointed out. &#8220;The second act\u2014I wasn&#8217;t crazy about the way one thing flowed to the next. Nor were Charles and Lee, so we all put our heads together and looked for ways to make it a little more cinematic. &#8220;We found a better place to put &#8216;Kids,&#8217; and I got rid of the Shriner&#8217;s Ballet, which I had no interest in doing. It was [the original director] Gower Champion&#8217;s number. It had nothing to do with the plot. It forwarded the plot nowhere. I didn&#8217;t really want my leading lady on her knees underneath a table, actually. Which is exactly what that was. I didn&#8217;t quite get that.
