{"id":76,"date":"2008-03-21T02:47:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-21T06:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clients.chrisvanpatten.com\/theatreaficionado.com\/2008\/03\/i-dream-of-lalume.html"},"modified":"2010-10-26T16:03:39","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T20:03:39","slug":"i-dream-of-lalume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theatreaficionado.com\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"I Dream of&#8230;Lalume?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"355\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lFS-925u9ZY&amp;hl=en\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"355\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lFS-925u9ZY&amp;hl=en\" wmode=\"transparent\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Yes, ladies and gents, Jeannie is singing and dancing (and take note: showing her navel). <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Eden\">Barbara Eden<\/a> was one of the four stars to take part in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0202441\/\">1967 TV production<\/a> of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kismet_%28musical%29\">Kismet<\/a>, <\/em>that glorious &#8217;50s operetta by Wright &amp; Forrest using the themes of Alexandre Borodin. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Ferrer\">Jose Ferrer<\/a> starred as Hajj, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Maria_Alberghetti\">Anna Maria Alberghetti<\/a> was Marsinah and the telecast featured an utterly atrocious performance from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Chakiris\">George Chakiris<\/a> as the Caliph. (So hard to believe this man won an Oscar).<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, as Lalume, Barbara vamps it up as a sex-pot love interest for Hajj. Bored with her disinterested husband, the villainous Wazir (Hans Conried), she gets to tear things up with that great showstopper, &#8220;Not Since Nineveh&#8221; in the role created on Broadway by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joan_Diener\">Joan Diener<\/a> and immortalized on film by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolores_Gray\">Dolores Gray<\/a>. Much to my surprise, she&#8217;s actually quite good (if you can forgive the general cheesiness in the orchestrations and staging). Eden later toured in productions of <em>Woman of the Year <\/em>and <em>Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. <\/em>(Both of which she apparently taped for TV. Anyone seen those?)
