“Follies” – A glimpse of the original

Who’s got the budget to recreate this spectacular piece of theatre? Here are fragments of the original cast, in a final dress rehearsal. Watch…marvel…enjoy… (The first part is viewable here).

"The Music and the Mirror" – September 29, 1983

From the record breaking 3,389th performance celebrating A Chorus Line becoming the longest running show on Broadway. Michael Bennett restaged the show for this single performance, bringing back original cast members and coming up with fascinating new ways of looking at the show. Here is Donna McKechnie leading several former Cassie’s through “The Music and the Mirror”

Who’s That Woman?

Forgive the quality, it’s silent footage synched up with a live recording of the show. It offers an imperfect glimpse into what many consider to be the greatest production number in the history of musical theatre and the grand opulence that was the original production of Follies, the sort that we may never again see on a Broadway stage.

Mary McCarty leads the ladies of the ensemble.

A Snowy-Blowy Christmas

Donna McKechnie leads the original cast of Promises Promises in the act one showstopper “Turkey Lurkey Time” on the 1969 Tony awards. The other two lead dancers are Baayork Lee and Margo Sappington. Choreography by Michael Bennett. Yes the lyrics are rather outrageous and the melody is infectiously 60s, but that’s part of the fun (thank you Bacharach and David). And technically, it’s a Christmas song. So in the spirit of the season and with the snow coming tomorrow, sit back and enjoy.
